Depakote is a widely used prescription drug that's been administered to patients who have had medical conditions that include epilepsy, other seizure disorders, migraine headaches and has also been used to treat the manic phase of bipolar disorder. While Depakote has proved to be largely effective in terms of its results on those who have used it, certain problems and potential Depakote side effects have been reported, some of which can lead to birth injuries that result from using Depakote with other medications.

According to a 2006 article published in Neurology, women who take Depakote for epilepsy have a 20.3 percent higher risk of giving birth to a child born with birth defects, whereas those on other medications for epilepsy had only a 10.7 percent chance.

Studies found that among mothers who took Depakote, 11% had children with birth defects, the most common of which was spina bifida, a neural tube defect in which spinal cord development is incomplete or deformed. In this same study, less than 2% of children born to mothers without epilepsy had similar congenital birth defects. The results of this study point to a 500% greater risk for birth defects or other complications when pregnant women took Depakote during their pregnancies.

While many issues in regards to this medication remain unresolved, it does not mean that you do not have legal rights to explore with a Depakote lawyer at John Anderson Law. Our firm has a long-standing practice of putting our clients' needs before all others, so you can rest assured that if you contact one of our Depakote lawyers, we will schedule a consultation promptly and immediately begin the process of evaluating your situation.
